Impression Collection

2020

The Impression Collection isn’t about anything. It doesn’t exist to say anything at all. It’s more about what can be done with the clothes, the stories they can create or be a part of, the impressions they create and leave. While the collection is the result of a series of randomly culminating research used to create new shapes and elements, the designs themselves are used as prompts to speak about culture, in this case the desire and possibility to create ever-changing personal characters or personas.

The foundation of the collection rests on a wide span of research, including an array of references from interior spaces and Eames mid-century furniture, Art Nouveau decorative arts like jewelry and interior objects, as well as film characters and the erotic line drawings of Franz von Bayros.

Aesthetically, the collection centers on a consistent curvilinear, organic line quality, and highly textural and diverse materials, ultimately creating “macro” or minimal pieces possessing both a masculine and feminine duality.

Conceptually, the collection exudes a feeling of defiance by subverting expectations through designs that have unique shapes, special 3D-elements, and unusual materials. For example, new materials were created that mimic and morph textures, both literally and visually. The collection also plays with new techniques like leather molding, and experiments with new materials such as metal and wood veneer for aesthetic and structural purposes. Themes like suspension and tension led to unique design ideas of sculpting and carving out spaces within shapes so that jewelry could intersect with the designs. Also, ideas of tension and control were used as a means of structure in the designs, in custom linings and inner structures to create and uphold sculptural shapes.

In addition to tangible explorations of shape and construction, the Impression Collection also delves into a more conceptual realm by evoking different emotions and archetypes. Through keen combinations of silhouette, material and color, and by seeing opportunities for new associations to be made, the collection gives form to intangible ideas such as sensuality, power, and modernity as well as romanticism, femininity, and vulnerability to all together, create diverse characters and personas.
