Materials

A curated selection of self developed, experimental textiles that strive to reinvent what materials can look and feel like. By using base materials of cotton, leather, vinyl and wool, and applying atypical materials of paper, powder, and pastes, new hyper tactile swatches were developed. Through unique handcraft processes of heating, wetting and burning, these surfaces were chemically altered to bring about specific effects. These textiles are polished with imperfections and possess a kinetic kind of energy due to the layers and dimensions they hold. They are fibers imbedded in stories that can emote something.

MOLTEN CHROME I

A mirorred vinyl heat set with large perpendicular pleats to create a visual curving effect due to the reflectivity of the material. Backed with a fusible wool felt. Leather could be a luxurious substitute.

WATERCOLOR LEATHER

Soft grain sheepskin leather dyed with diluted paint, using sponges to layer analogous colors and multiple hues to mimic aged textured walls.

CHIPPED LEATHER I

Soft-grain leather with a chipped paint effect created by applying latex paint and then using paint remover and a palette knife to scrape off excess.

MARBLED PRINT I

Cotton swatch with a digitally modified marbled print. First, the print was done by hand and then transfered digitally, exaggerating the line quality and creating a continuous print.

BURNT VINYL I

Gold metallic home interior vinyl backed with a poly-cotton backing, burnt by setting the surface on fire in a series of streaks.

EMBOSSING POWDER I

Kidskin leather swatch with a powder-streaked surface texture created by applying embossing powder to glued areas and then using a heat gun to harden the powder in place.

LEATHER MOLD I

Soft-grain sheepskin leather wet molded into soft organic folds and wrinkles mimicking the look of skin. A heat gun is used to secure the folds into place and then a perma wet gloss is applied to get a hyper wet look.

MARBLED PRINT II

Cotton swatch with a digitally modified marbled print. First, the print was done by hand and then transfered digitally, exaggerating the line quality and creating a continuous print.

MOLTEN CHROME II

A mirorred vinyl heat set with small repeating pleats in multiple directions, creating a visual effect of melting or rippling. Backed with a fusible wool felt. Leather could be a luxurious substitute.

LEATHER PANEL I

Soft grain cow leather cut into panels and then aged on the surface using brown antiquing wax and then edged with black dye. The pieces are joined together and backed with a black felt (or black leather) to create interior paneling look.

BURNT FABRIC

Polyester cotton swatch cut to create a linked floral mesh with the edges, then burned to create beaded edges and puckered surfaces.

CHIPPED LEATHER II

Cowhide leather with a chipped paint effect created by applying latex paint and then using paint remover and a palette knife to scrape off excess in a rougher manner.

CHIPPED LEATHER III

Kidskin leather with a chipped paint effect created by applying latex paint and then using paint remover and a palette knife to scrape off excess. The top is then coated with a Perma wet gel medium to create a clean, glossy top coat.

TEXTURE PASTE

Wool swatch with a three-dimensional surface texture created by applying a flexible texture paste with a comb. Although three-dimensional, the wool is still flexible, just with a more bodied hand.

EMBOSSING POWDER I

Cotton swatch with a jet bead-like surface texture created by applying embossing powder to glued areas and then using a heat gun to harden the powder into a dark glossy finish.

MIRROR AGE

A mirorred vinyl made to mimic aged mirrors by using black screenprinting ink and applying it to the surface and edges using a natural, raw sponge.

EMBOSSING POWDER II

Latex swatch with a powder-streaked surface texture created by applying embossing powder to glued areas and then using a heat gun to harden the powder in place.

PAPER PASTE I

Wool backed swatch with a layered paper surface. Each paper is soaked and broken down in wheat paste and then layered, applying more paper and then tissue paper on top to create a unique, distressed look.

LEATHER MOLD II

Soft grain sheepskin leather wet molded into organic repeating curves using a heat gun to finish and set the curves in place.

LEATHER PANEL II

Soft-grain sheepskin leather cut into panels and then aged on the surface and edged with black dye. The pieces are joined together to create a interior paneling look.

SILVER LEAF on LEATHER

Silver leaf foil sheets applied to leather using a water based adhesive, leaving the foil to corrode and chemically react resulting in unique color variations.

SILVER LEAF on FABRIC

Silver leaf foil sheet applied to cotton fabric using a water based adhesive, leaving the foil to corrode and chemically react resulting in unique color variations.

PAPER PASTE II

Cotton backed swatch with a layered paper surface, taking pages from a book. The paper is soaked and broken down in wheat paste and then layered on top, using a palette knife creating a unique, distressed look.

BURNT VINYL II

Thin acetate vinyl with a puckered smocked-like surface texture created by lighting and melting the surface in a series of points.

NATURAL AGED LEATHER

Soft grain cowskin aged using latex paint and palette knives to define the grain by enhancing the contrast of the texture 1: thick layer of white paint applied at one end and then scraped off in one direction, covering the section 2: thick layer of softer brown paint applied all over and then quickly scraped off 3: single layer thick paint applied all over, let sit, then scraped off excess 4: first darker brown layer applied and scraped off, then lighter brown layer applied all over section and scraped 5: thinner single white layer, let sit and then scraped off.
