She is not a concept designer, but a dreamer, researcher, and an opportunist. She extracts inspiration from anywhere and everywhere in an open-ended process that is messy, illogical and non-linear. Her research and creative process is a combination of dreams, objective thinking, intuitive reactions and technical exploration. This makes her studio board an intriguing composition of far reaching and unconventional research. Without a concept, the aim is for each collection to portray an amalgam, where chaos and chance lead the way and opposites attract and bind. Ultimately, her work is a complex balance of opposites like sensuality and austerity, minimalism and maximalism, playfulness and severity, surrealism and reality.

Aesthetically, her design voice is rooted in a structural organic line quality that takes shape in three dimensional forms and diverse materials, textures and colors. Each piece is bold, yet open-ended enough, in that anyone can add their own interpretation emphasizing that each piece is not limited to one fantasy. In fact, it is the designs themselves that then become inspirations for her film work. She builds stories around each collection or even each individual piece, creating characters, sets and scripted content that breathe life and meaning to her designs. Overall, her approach to fashion produces compelling collections and creative content as immersions into different worlds.

Sustainability

Capucine commits to sustainability by making conscientious decisions in all steps of production and design, ensuring a responsible use of environmental and social resources. In terms of technique, Capucine concentrates on responsible sourcing and waste minimization. Many materials are sourced from dead stock allotments, seeing new opportunities for forgotten fabrics. Newer materials are used only when they possess a sustainable balance of aesthetics, environmental impact, price, and quality/durability. When producing these collections, she commits to achieving a balance between the environment, the workers and her customers. It’s critical to recognize all parties’ wishes and limits, ensuring that both are respected because if something is sustainable, but unattainable, what is the point?

The second approach to sustainability involves the sustainability of design. The difficult task is to create designs that are new and bold, yet timeless and reusable over time. Capucine’s pieces have the ability to be restyled and “reborn” to fit new needs, new styles, and new contexts. In other words, each design is bold yet open-ended enough to allow different people to integrate it into their own identity and lifestyle. This freedom is expressed through the collection’s campaigns, which are intended to extend the life of a single collection. In general, brands stage single presentations to showcase and market their collections, yet there is a greater opportunity to create complementary projects that build on the ideas of the collection. Films, photo series, and real-world immersions can be ticketed and sold on their own, allowing her collections to continue to live. By recreating new meanings and contexts through changing characters and stories, it becomes less necessary to produce so many collections per year, as each collection can reach a fuller potential.
